February 2012

A lot has happened at Heathcote since the last update.  Back in the spring we started planning to purchase the neighboring Anacker property to make it part of a united Heathcote valley and expand our permaculture programs.  Our land committee worked hard and the fund raising committee put together over $150,000 in donations to make it happen.  Unfortunately, the Anackers turned down our offer and signed a contract with another buyer.  There is still a chance that the deal won't go to settlement, so cross your fingers for us.  Even if we are not able to buy the Anacker land, we are still planning to expand our permaculture demonstration and education programs by acquiring other land in the local area or continuing to improve our current land.

Another thing that happened is that we are working with the county to update our zoning status.  In order to come into compliance with county regulations, we decided to move out of some of the buildings that we had been living in.  There has been a little bit of shuffling -- John and Bob moved into the mill apartment, Matt and Betsy moved into the farmhouse, and Nick and Rachel moved into Polaris.  We also decided to temporarily move our educational workshops off site while we resolve our zoning status.  We're working with the county to get ourselves designated as a farm, and we're asking if we can have educational programs as an "accessory use" to the farming.  A lot of people have been working really hard getting the farming operations ready for the agriculture board to inspect.  Appreciations all around, especially to the many volunteers who have come to our work days!  We have more work days coming up, so you can still join in on the fun.

Another big bit of news is that Wren and CT are leaving the community.  They have been touring the country bringing consensus and facilitation training to the Occupy movement in various cities.  So with all the travel and the changes from the county, they've made the decision to take a sabbatical from Heathcote.  They bought a large RV camper and will be living out of that as they travel.  We had a fundraising party for them at the end of December, and we wish them well in their travels.  To find out what they're up to, or to have a fundraising party for them, visit Hippie Chick Diaries at http://hippiechickdiaries.com.

May 2011

For the past 35 years, generations of Heathcoters have gone up to Anacker Acres to swing in the swings, play cards, pick apples and blackberries, and enjoy the generous hospitality of Bill and Margaret Anacker.  Now, their property us up for sale, and we are very excited about the possibility of being able to expand our community to include this special place. The Anacker property is 24 acres including areas of bright sun with ideal crop growing conditions, and unspoiled wetlands – in contrast to Heathcote’s steep shaded valley.  This once in a lifetime opportunity provides some wonderful possibilities for expanding our ecological / permaculture teachings, improving food security, and accessing alternative energy sources (solar, micro-hydro).  We’re also hopeful that we’ll be able to house new members, ongoing interns, students and guest educators on site.  As this is a large and expensive endeavor, we have begun a fundraising campaign.  Please consider making a donation, or contact us to find other ways of getting involved.

February 2011

We are very sad to see Mike, Larissa, and their kids Galen and Noah leave the community.  But we wish them well on their new adventure in Atlanta.  The community is still very full, however, thanks to several new applicants.  We've got Anne, Lisa, and Betsy still in the provisional membership phase, and we've got CT, Rachel, Matt, Howard and Heart now in the 21-day visit phase.  We've also had Michelle and Ted staying with us as work-exchangers for the last couple of months.  Ted has turned out to be a bread-baker extraordinaire (Ted the Bread-Head), and Michelle is making a beautiful mosaic in the laundry room floor out of Nick's broken pottery.  I'm sad to report that they'll be leaving us this week.  Our intern Jonathan left recently as well.

Another bit of big news in the community lately is that the new large greenhouse is being finished.  Matt has been putting a lot of work into it, late into the evenings in the freezing cold, but it looks like it'll be ready for the upcoming growing season.  Matt recently wrote an article about the greenhouse that you can read here, and there are some pictures here

Another exciting project that we're working on is to purchase some land adjacent to the community.  Bill Anacker, who originally owned the whole valley and sold the original Heathcote plot to the School of Living back in 1965, is now in his 90's and the family is trying to sell the land that his house is on.  The community would like to buy it, and is putting together a plan that includes fundraising and financing.  If you or anyone you know would be interested in a tax-deductible donation to help preserve the land and grow the community, please contact us.

As always, Karen and the education committee have an exciting year full of workshops and classes planned, and other events will like DanceFree, music, and hot tub parties will happen over the course of the year.  If you haven't already signed up to receive the email newsletter, please create a profile now.

June 2010

The community continues to be pretty full.  We've got several new members finishing up their provisional membership, plus there are currently 6 interns here!  Three of them, Kwame, Patty, and Matt, have been here for quite some time, and the other three, Kat, Eric, and Tori just got here at the beginning of June and will be here for 1 to 2 months.  But it's great to have such energy and enthusiasm in the community!  We've been having weekly intern nights where we get together in the evening and hang out and socialize with the interns.  We've had a bonfire, game night, drumming, and almost had a hot-tub party so far.

Thanks to Betsy and Matt, the gardens are going strong and keeping all these interns busy.  They've got a huge master plan for lots of greenhouses, and Matt has been clearing the hill above the hill garden to make room for more crops.  We really appreciate all the work that they've put into it.

Patty and Karen have been keeping the education program going with permaculture design classes.  It seems like almost every weekend there's another group here working on their designs.  This coming weekend they'll be presenting their final designs and everyone is welcome to come hear them.

While the homeschooling open classroom is winding down for the summer, the energy being put into it isn't.  Gloria is putting together a business plan to expand the program and bring in more kids for next year.  If you know of some homeschoolers that might be interested please give us a call.

Oh, and let's not forget Bob who is starting up his spiritual practice group again.  If you like meditating you might want to get involved in that weekly group.

If you haven't been to Heathcote in a while you might want to come for one of our visitor weekends.  With all the people here and the stuff going on, it's pretty lively when we all get together!

November 2009

There is a lot happening at Heathcote these days.  We've had several new people join us, which has brought our numbers up to 15 adults and 6 kids.  Mike & Larissa, with their two boys Galen and Noah, have moved in and are now doing their provisional membership.  Also Gloria has completed her 21-day visit and is waiting for the room in Polaris (the staw-bale building) to be ready for her to move into so she can start her provisional membership.  We also have Betsy back, who used to be a member and is now back and taking over as lead gardener.  And then we have Anne who will be joining us to start the membership process later this month, and Steve the intern who is thinking about applying for membership.

It's been really fun to start using the wood-fired cob hot tub.  We've had a couple of hot-tub parties so far.  We're still trying to figure out how to control the fire to get just the right temperature, but we're starting to get the hang of it.

It's hard to invite the entire wider community to these parties, since we can only fit about 5 people at a time, but if you're interested in coming to one just send us an email and we'll let you know when the next one is. There are some pictures of the cob workshop where we built the hot tub in the photo gallery if you're interested in seeing more.

There are also pictures of the new hoop greenhouse that we are building in the garden.  We got a grant from the Koinonia Foundation to build it. We're really excited about having greens and other vegetables all year 'round!
