Visitor Day

Visitor Day and Bee Nucleus Box Volunteer Project at Heathcote on Feb. 1, 2014

Note:  The bee box activity is filled to capacity.  You are welcome to attend Visitor Day and participate in garden projects, lunch, tour, potluck and music.

Heathcote and Oberon are offering a bee nucleus box participation event on February 1st as the featured event on our visitor day.

Details as follows:  Roger Williams, president of the Central Maryland Beekkeepers Association (CMBA), will be on site to lead a hands on construction project that will result in about 20 finished (except the painting) boxes that will be used by the CMBA to split hives and create more bee colonies.  Because of massive bee kills, it has become more and more difficult for beekeepers, particularly apprentice ones, to get starter bees.  Bee boxes are one way to address the egregious loss of bee colonies, and allow new beekeepers to establish their own hives.  It is also a way of beginning a local source of bees that hopefully will be stronger and better adapted to this area.  Most bees now are ordered from Georgia and some other deep southern states.

We're going to be in the Mill so there will be plenty of room for all and everyone should be warm and comfortable.   We anticipate that some other members of the CMBA will be there, and it may even be that your appetite will be whetted to pursue beekeeping yourself, or simply find out what challenges our bee friends now face and how you might help them.  We’ll be working on the nucleus boxes from 9 am to 4 pm.

Here is the schedule for the day:

9 am – 12:00 pm          Bee Nucleus Box Work Session 1
12:00 – 1:00 pm           Lunch (suggested donation $5)
