The “Empathy in Action" classes are a combination of discussion and practice. We basically check in with each other at the beginning of each class to see if anyone has anything that is up for them, that they would like some empathy for, or if anyone just has questions or comments about the process in general, or to share experiences they've had during the week trying to put it into action.
The emphasis is on transforming our consciousness and developing the habit of looking at ourselves and others through the "lens of empathy”, which eventually translates into "communication", but the focus is on the awareness underlying it. In this class we are committed to either trying to express ourselves through the "language of experience", or asking for the empathy we would like to help us clarify what we are trying to say. In the role of facilitator or coach, I often interrupt and interject comments or questions in order to point out in real time the habits and patterns of our thoughts and speech, which sometimes may seem abrupt or disruptive, but it usually serves to point out something worthwhile that would have been missed otherwise.
As of yet there is no curriculum per se, but I am working on a book that will be used for that purpose eventually. For now Marshall Rosenberg's book “Nonviolent Communication” can serve as a supporting text, as well as any of his other publications, mainly the small booklets on specific topics. I highly recommend the one titled “Practical Spirituality”.
